"SolarFast dyes only develop colour and become permanent upon exposure to sunlight (UV). This unique property means SolarFast may be used to create remarkably detailed photographs, photograms and shadow-prints on paper or fabric by harnessing the power of the sun! Anything you place on the painted surface to block the light will create a printed impression in a matter of minutes, whether a solid object (toys, tools, plants, lace, etc.), a photographic negative (an image digitally printed onto a transparency)* or shadow (from folds in the fabric or a 3D object). SolarFast dyes are also great for painting, tie dyeing, screen printing, stamping, batik and more—no heat setting, chemical or steam fixing necessary. The dye leaves fabric completely soft to the touch. On paper, it has zero relief and will not affect the texture of the surface whatsoever, making it a powerful tool for mixed-media arts".

Fresh ferns, petals and flowers are composed onto paper and then exposed to UV light (the Aussie sun!). The violet and cyan colours mix and merge to create an array of shades of light and deep purple, and Prussian blue, outlining the shapes and forms of the botanicals. Katie printed of a 55cm Kadhi Round hand made, acid free, cotton rag paper, 300 gsm.

Cyanotype is the “original” sun-printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. Discovered in 1842 and distinctive for producing rich, Prussian blue monochromatic prints, Cyanotype was popular well into the 20th century as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps and plans (hence the enduring architectural term “blueprint”) and famously, for making impressions of biological specimens in the field (“photograms”).

Cyanotype imagery, developed in the 19th century as a way of documenting botanical specimens, is one of the oldest forms of photography. In this one-day workshop, Northern Rivers visual artist Katie Alleva will lead participants step by step through the fascinating technique of wet cyanotype printing, using objects from the natural world to create dreamy, beautiful images. The class will be inspired by the pioneering work of 19th century botanist Anna Atkins, and participants will end the day with a series of cyanotype impressions on high-quality paper to take home.

Participants will need to wear covered shoes, bring their own apron, and a selection of leaves, feathers, flowers, pressed flowers, to utilise in their cyanotype prints. All other materials and equipment will be provided.

This workshop will include a short break for lunch. Participants are invited to bring their own lunch, or are welcome to eat at the Gallery Café located next door to Ignite Studios.

Katie Alleva is a local visual artist and teacher who has developed her cyanotype practice over the past five years. I have come to embrace the transformative power of art practice. My art workshops are not just about teaching you an art technique. They are embedded with encouraging a deeper connection to self and community. They promote self-compassion through understanding how unique our mark-making is. That simply being your authentic self, is the most healing intention you can set for yourself as a budding artist. My workshops are designed to ignite the creative spark within. I can assure you, that you will feel inspired, uplifted, and connected and leave with ideas buzzing around for further creative endeavours!!!

Advance bookings are essential via the ticketing link below, or by phoning the Katie on 0435 203 936 or emailing: katiealleva@gmail.com
